Want to learn how to make UK Garage drums in FL Studio 21? In this video, I’ll show you my favourite techniques for creating a cool UKG drum beat.
The technique used in this UK Garage drum tutorial is not limited to FL Studio - you can use whatever DAW, you like (Logic, Ableton, Cubase, etc.)
The tutorial is going to focus on the importance of applying Swing to your drums. To obtain that “Shuffly” vibe and groove in UKG, you have to move some of the drum hits off the grid.
Human feel to the drums is important and I will try my best to show you how to apply it to your own UKG or UK Garage House Drum beat.
We will also play around with adding percussion hits to our UK Garage drum loop. Percussion can add that nice groovy vibe that we crave in UK Garage and 2-step Garage.
For the tutorial, you can almost use whatever drum samples are at your disposal to create a UKG Drum vibe. However, if you have some sample packs with House drums it will help a lot.

-- HOW I MAKE UK GARAGE DRUMS --
The thing I love the most about UK Garage is definitely the drums. WOW! With the right swing applied to your drums, you can really make a fantastic UK Garage track.
My approach on how to make UK Garage drums is almost the same all the time. It can be boiled down into a few simple steps:
1️⃣ Find a punchy kickdrum and create a 2-step Garage groove
2️⃣ Layer a clap with a tight snare sample
3️⃣ Introduce some ghost notes for the claps - or use a rim shot
4️⃣ Put in an open hihat on the off beat
5️⃣ Sprinkle the 16th grid with some closed hihats that are swung
6️⃣ Fill up the remaining space in the UKG drum loop with some percussion hits
7️⃣ Route all elements to a drum bus and apply compression and EQ
That’s it. This is my recipe for making UK Garage drums.
Of course, the process differs from project to project. However, I like to have a standard framework to work after and then introduce some creativity into it. And I encourage you to do the same when making your UK Garage drums. Enjoy!
