Tajik SSR. 1974. The city of Shurab. A place lost among the spurs of the Turkestan Range, where coal dust mingled with the scent of mountain herbs. A city of miners, pioneers, and strict traditions.

Gulrana Bazarova. Twenty-one years old. A frail girl with wide eyes, considered a model daughter in town. Quiet, diligent, a lab technician at a processing plant. Her life seemed predetermined: work, the respect of her neighbors, and a wedding awaited by the entire neighborhood. A wedding with Rustam—an enviable groom and the pride of the mine.

Preparations were carried out according to all the rules. A snow-white dress, scarce treats, hundreds of guests, and ancient customs that in this region meant more than laws. The wedding night was supposed to be a triumph of honor for both families. The entire city awaited the morning to witness, as per tradition, the proof of the bride's virginity.

No one noticed how disaster was brewing behind the festive façade.

First, there was a strange silence in the newlyweds' new apartment. While the restaurant was still buzzing with songs, a drama unspoken of was unfolding in the bedroom. One chance witness, one secret enemy, and one kitchen knife hidden at the bottom of a suitcase under a wedding satin.

The next morning, Shurab awoke to a scream that cut through the mountain air.
The doors that should have opened to joyful congratulations burst open to reveal the police. The starched sheets, a symbol of purity, were stained crimson. But this wasn't the blood the stern mother-in-law had been expecting.

Officially, it was a tragic accident or sudden madness. But rumors spoke of something else. Of workshop dressing rooms, of locked factory doors, and of a man whose name they feared to speak aloud. The authorities tried to close the case quickly, so as not to tarnish the image of the Soviet worker. Documents were hidden, witnesses were intimidated, and the truth was buried under tons of coal.

With each decade, this story grew into a legend. But the empty apartment in the building on Shakhtyorov Street still holds the memory of that night. And those who try to get to the truth understand: sometimes the price of "honor" is too high for one human life.
