Video Overview
In this lecture we examine the ARM UART peripheral and study its register set in detail. We begin with an overview of the UART and its components including the programmable baud rate generator. The programmer model and the summary of registers are introduced along with how register layouts are defined through offset name type reset value width and brief descriptions. The concept of a 12 bit UART address space is explained along with how register addresses are computed from a base address. A detailed walkthrough of the UART Data Register covers its read write behavior bit widths status flags such as overrun break parity and framing errors and how to safely handle reserved bits. The lecture also highlights why peripherals often allocate larger address spaces than strictly required and demonstrates step by step how UART registers are read and written based on the ARM technical reference.
About IIT Madras' online Bachelor of Science programme
