Although it looks simple, there’s actually a lot more to running than just putting one foot in front of the other. If you’re a beginning runner, you’ll want to know how to start off on the right foot. To run effectively, you need to hold every part of your body in the correct position, from your head right down to your feet.
When you run, you put your body through so much pressure that if your muscles or bones are in the wrong place, it can massively increase your risk of injury. You need to learn to align them properly before you get started.
Your running mechanics are determined by the strength and flexibility of certain muscles and how your body is built. Here are a few basics to help you maintain proper running form on any terrain from exercise physiologist Adam St. Pierre and Christy Barth, a physical therapist and strength and conditioning specialist.
1. Maintain a short & quick stride:
2. Keep your knee in line.
3. Push up and off.
4. Watch your elbows.
5. Relax your hands.
6. Work your core.
Here are some special considerations to make when you’re climbing a hill or making a descent:
GOING UP
*Keep your head and chest up
*Look straight ahead
*Visualize the road rising to meet you
*Keep your shoulders back
*Push up and off the hill, springing from your toes
*Don’t bend at the waist and hunch over
*Keep your hands and fists loose
GOING DOWN
*Keep your torso upright
*Look straight ahead
*Visualize “controlled falling”
*Keep your nose over your toes
*Step softly; don’t let your feet slap the pavement
And remember, no single running “technique” will make you faster or keep you from getting hurt. To ensure that, follow these basic training principles:
1. Ramp up slowly.
2. Recover right.
3. Wear good shoes.
4. Introduce any changes gradually.
