This video is made for anyone wanting to know how much OBS Studio impacts your game performance when you're streaming or recording your gameplay.
In this video, I did a few benchmark scenarios:
Benchmark without OBS Studio open (only in graph from CapFrameX no RTSS)
CBR (Constant Bit Rate, recommended for streaming)
-CRF x264 (Constant Rate Factor, recommended for recording)
CQP H.264 & HEVC (Constant Quantization Parameter, recommended for recording)
I'm using 2 software for measuring FPS:
RTSS 7.3.5 Beta 2
CapFrameX 1.7.1
For CPU encoding, I used the following presets:
Very Fast
Faster
Fast
Medium
For GPU NVIDIA encoding, I used the following presets:
P1
P2
P3
P4
P5
P6
P7
I did the Multipass Mode benchmark only for CBR.
Additional note:
I had to limit the fps to 160 fps in GTA V otherwise the game will stutter (for reference: google GTA V 187.5 FPS). I tried to limit it to 180 and 170 fps but the game still stutters.
I set High Performance power plan in Windows.
I set power management mode in NVIDIA Control Panel for OBS Studio and all games to Prefer Maximum Performance.
Between 7 GPU encoding presets, there is almost no performance difference may be because the NVENC usage almost never hits 50%. Except when in PUBG, in some areas, NVENC usage exceeds 50%, and it reduces performance a little bit.
This behavior is consistent when I up the resolution of the OBS from 1080p to 1440p. It seems 50% NVENC usage is the limit before the game performance reduces even more, even though the performance is still good.
CSGO settings are set to the lowest
GTA V settings high
PUBG settings are set to the lowest except texture, anti-aliasing, and view distance to ultra. also with sharpening turned on.
