The Devil - Tanya George lyrics
Verse 1
I was the sober sally sitting at the party alone
never sipping on the drinks or smoking a cone
but the devils drag me in and inhaled me up
to be the next one, hitting the drugs
the struggle not to fall in, let addiction begin
but who was I kidding, when we all love our gin, when we all love our gin
CHORUS
The devil got me, got me again
The devil only catches all the innocent things
The devil got me, got me again
But the devil only catches all the innocent things
The devil got you, got you again
The devil only catches all the innocent things
The devil got me, got me again
But the devil only catches all the innocent things
Verse 2
Didn’t think I’d fall in love with a drunk
Or be sniffing the table of my best friends home
But the devils dragged me in, and inhaled me up
To be the next one, supplying good looking junk
but the feeling not to run away, away from it all
sit and accept that this is our life for sure, this is our life for sure
CHORUS +
Oh De Da De Dum, the devil catches
Oh De Da De Dum, the devil catches
Oh De Da De Dum, the devil catches
The devil only catches all the innocent things
Verse 3
I couldn’t stay away, stay away from it all
Mum and Dad pushing to be as straight as a wall
So I crashed right into that brick hard thing
And transformed myself into societies sins
The devil didn’t care he just sat and stared
He laughed really loud cause he knew I was there, he knew I was there
You know when your, trapped in your hole of your worst nightmare
You wanna get on it cause you just don’t care
Surrounding you everywhere you go,
You wish your mouth could say no!
CHORUS
The devil got me, got me again
The devil only catches all the innocent things
The devil got me, got me again
But the devil only catches all the innocent things
The devil got you, got you again
The devil only catches all the innocent things
The devil got you, got you again
But the devil only catches all the innocent things
Oh De Da De Dum, the devil catches
Oh De Da De Dum, the devil catches
Oh De Da De Dum, the devil catches
The devil only catches all the innocent things x 2
There's a wink buried in this song, and that's what makes it so good. Built on a cool, laid-back groove with a playful bounce that pulls you in before you've even clocked what's being said, The Devil is Tanya George at her most disarmingly self-aware, recounting a slow, almost inevitable slide from innocent wallflower to willing participant with the kind of candid humour that only comes from lived experiences or seeing others go through it. She's not preaching. She's discussing temptation, and inviting you to do the same.
The beat never rushes, never moralises, and that lightness is exactly the point. The devil doesn't arrive with thunder and fire, he shows up at a party, and he's pretty good company. George's chorus is an earworm wrapped in a shrug, the kind that lodges itself in your head and stays there long after the song ends.
Sharp, honest, and genuinely fun, for fans of laid-back alt-pop with a knowing smile. Think early Amy Winehouse, Ed Sheeran's playing guitar with D'angelo on over a gin they promised themselves they wouldn't have.
'The Devil', July 8th, is the last single release before Tanya's Debut Album 'Contrast' drops July 29th, followed by her album launch Aug 8th, Ubud Folk Festival in Bali and China at the Chengdu International Sister Cities Youth Music Festival.
