Gotham Knights was reviewed by Matthew Forde on PS5. Also available on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Batman is dead... like really dead. Jim Gordon too. Gotham's criminals have begun to take over in the aftermath. Now the remaining Bat-Family of Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood must come together to solve Bruce's last case, find out how it connects to the Court of Owls and restore justice to the city.
Set in its own universe away from the Arkham series, Gotham Knights is the first game from WB Games Montreal since 2013's Batman Arkham Origins. That's why it's both surprising and disappointing that the game feels like a major step back from what has come before.
If it's not the lacklustre combat that takes longer than it has any right to defeat the most low level of enemies, it's the pedestrian speed at which it takes to get anywhere, whether you're using the Batcycle or taking to the skies via a comically long grapple hook. On top of this, Gotham is lifeless with a lack of co-op incentives that put a strain on the single-player experience.
I've not even mentioned the fact that on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game can only run at a subpar 30 frames per second. While its story might offer the occasional glimpse of something that could have been, it gives me no great pleasure in saying that Gotham Knights is my biggest disappointment of the year.
