Whether you're a seasoned IT professional or a curious beginner, this step-by-step guide is designed to make the process as simple as possible. We'll start from the basics, explaining what a virtual machine is and why it's useful. Then, we'll walk you through the entire process of setting up your own virtual machine in VMware.
Below are the steps to create Window Server Virtual Machine:
Step 1. First, open VMware Workstation on your computer. If you haven’t installed it yet, you can download it from the official VMware website.
Step 2. Now click on 'Create a New Virtual Machine.' You’ll be given two options: 'Typical' and 'Custom.' For most users, ‘Custom’ is the best choice. It’s simple and handles most of the configuration for you. Click ‘Next’ to continue.
Step 3. Here, you can choose how you want to install the operating system. You can use an ISO file, a physical disc, or choose to install the OS later. I’m going to use an ISO file, so I’ll select the option and browse to locate my ISO image.
Step 4. Next, VMware will try to detect the operating system from your ISO. If it doesn't, you can manually select the version of the OS you're going to install. This helps VMware optimize the VM settings for that OS.
Step 5. Now it’s time to name your virtual machine and choose where you want to store it. I recommend keeping the name short and meaningful, and saving it in a dedicated folder for easy access.
Step 6. Next, set the disk size for your virtual machine. This depends on the OS and what you plan to do with it. For most Linux distros, 20 GB is enough. For Windows, you might want to allocate at least 40–60 GB. You can choose to store the disk as a single file or split into multiple files.
Step 7. After reviewing the summary, click ‘Finish’ to create your virtual machine. VMware will now build the VM based on the settings we just configured.
Step 8. Now click on ‘Power on this virtual machine’ to start the installation process. The virtual machine will boot from the ISO file, and the OS installation process will begin, just like on a physical computer.
Step 9. Go ahead and follow the standard installation steps for your operating system. This might include setting up partitions, choosing a language, creating a user, and setting a password.
Step 10. Once the installation is complete, the virtual machine will restart. You may need to remove the ISO from the virtual CD/DVD drive to avoid booting into the installer again.
Step 11. After logging into the OS, don’t forget to install VMware Tools. This enhances performance, enables features like drag and drop, and improves screen resolution. Just go to 'VM' in the top menu and select 'Install VMware Tools' or 'Reinstall VMware Tools.
