The basal nuclei (also known as basal ganglia, or nuclei basales) are several clusters of gray matter located in the white matter lateral to the thalamus at the base of the cerebral hemispheres. The basal nuclei are part of the forebrain, located at the border between the frontal lobes and above the brainstem. Traditionally, the basal nuclei included the striatum (corpus striatum), which in turn consists of the caudate nucleus (nucleus caudatus), putamen (putamen), and globus pallidus, as well as the claustrum (claustrum) and amygdala (corpus amygdaloideum).
