Anomalocaris. The Largest Shrimp in Earth's History
Many of you probably enjoy shrimp. And the bigger, the better. Living shrimp can reach a length of approximately 25 centimeters. But in the seas of the Cambrian Period, there lived the "Anomalous Shrimp," which ranged from 40 to 100 centimeters in length and could eat anything. Anomalocaris is actually an arthropod, but is not related to shrimp. It got its name from the distinctive shape of its mouthparts. Their imprints were the first discovery of this creature. This happened in the late 19th century. Over more than 100 years of research, scientists have discovered what this prehistoric predator really looked like. It had toothed mouthparts, unusual fins consisting of lateral plates, and a flat, fan-shaped tail. Anomalocaris: The Largest Shrimp in Earth's History
