Spin fishing for pike has undergone a real transformation in recent years. Previously, pike fishing meant choosing between live bait, spinners, and perhaps dead baitfish on a rig.
These days, when pike fishing, you primarily hear terms like jerkbait, vertical jigging, baitcasting, pelagic fishing, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, pulling, burning, jigging, and so on.
As an experienced angler, it's fantastic that we now have so many great methods and lures available, especially for spin fishing for pike. The many large pike caught on artificial lures year after year are certainly due in no small part to the increasing specialization in pike fishing.
For novice anglers, however, this flood of terms and possibilities surrounding pike fishing is often more confusing than helpful.
If you follow the media, you could almost get the impression that it's now nearly impossible to catch a pike without a boat and fish finder.
Often, artificial lures are recommended for pike that, due to their size, are so heavy that you need correspondingly heavy tackle, which can make spin fishing for pike quite strenuous.
Gone are the days when the 40-gram spoon was the biggest lure in your tackle box.
Nevertheless, some things haven't changed over the years. Above all, the waters haven't gotten any bigger – the manageable local club pond or the small river are still the main fishing spots for many anglers.
These are precisely the spots that offer fantastic opportunities for beginners in spin fishing. They don't require any special equipment and can usually be fished quite simply from the bank.
And yes, you can still fish for ordinary pike in ordinary waters with ordinary tackle and experience some truly great days of fishing, thus finding your way into spin fishing for pike!
To give you a small impression of how much fun and how easy it can be, we met up with Browning team angler Johannes Ermer.
At his small lake, we filmed a video about the basics of spin fishing for pike for beginners.
