If a Google Drive or Google Docs link says You need access, Request access, or only opens in read-only mode, the problem usually comes down to just three things: wrong Google account, wrong permission level, or restricted sharing. Google’s own help says access is tied to the exact Google account the file was shared with, and if you use multiple accounts, switching to the correct one is often the real fix.

In this guide, I’ll show you the exact fix path: identify the access message correctly, switch to the right Google account, retry the link properly, request access from the owner if needed, understand Viewer / Commenter / Editor, and then test browser-level fixes only if the account and permissions already look correct. Google also documents that owners can share files either as Restricted or Anyone with the link, and can assign Viewer, Commenter, or Editor access.
