Despite the majority of the population in Kashmir being Muslims, how did Kashmir join India? After independence, in the year 1947, King Hari Singh of Kashmir had decided to remain independent without joining India and Pakistan. But Pakistan did not like this independence of Kashmir, so Pakistan attacked Kashmir on 22 October 1947. In this war, Raja Hari Singh's army could not compete with the Pakistani Army. Due to which Pakistan had captured areas like Uri, Moradabad of Kashmir and now they were moving towards Srinagar. Seeing the Pakistani army moving forward, King Hari Singh appealed to India for help. But since Kashmir is an independent country, India could not help, because Pakistan had attacked Kashmir, not India. In such a situation, Raja Hari Singh was left with no other option but to join India. So finally on 26 October 1947, Hari Singh signed the instrument of accession and Kashmir was merged into India!
