L-Arginine was the original nitric oxide boosting supplement, but when used alone, you need VERY high doses (to the point of GI distress) to get a plasma arginine (and thus nitric oxide) boost. This is why brands moved to L-Citrulline. But when looking at Universal Nutrition's two Animal Pump products, you actually see variations of BOTH. Does that make sense?

It turns out it does. Mike covers three studies in the blog post linked above showing that 1g L-arginine + 1g L-citrulline outperforms two grams of either one on their own!

The reason is that L-Citrulline actually inhibits arginase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down so much arginine. So by combining them, you actually get better synergy.

With all the supply chain issues going on, citrulline is being squeezed, so don't be surprised to see this strategy used to save on citrulline in new supplements through 2022 or so.
