Cooper Grodin, Grace Morgan, Ben Jacoby: Final Lair (read description)
Ok, so it isn't anything new that the Restaged Tour has mixed reviews and tons of discussion about it. The Final Lair in particular is a focal point in that in being the climax of the show it also brings together everything that people find at fault with it. The tour wanted to be more "real" and literal and it achieves that in a way. The staging and choreography are quite flat, spells everything out without leaving tons of room for space and imagination, and violent. Now the Final Lair, especially in recent years, is a more aggressive/violent scene by nature. But Hal Prince never said "Hey, you know what would be a great move to really show how unhinged the Phantom is? Let him throw Christine on a bed, hold her down, and climb on it next to her!" It just implies... nothing good. So also trigger warning for that, which is why it says "read description" in the title.
That being said, having seen the tour live I can say that there were huge amounts of talent in the casts. That goes for this video as well; I would've loved to have seen Cooper and Ben especially in the original. I think it would've softened their portrayals so much more. But I do have a soft spot for Cooper's voice. Grace was a very sweet Christine in both voice and acting and it was lovely to see her emerge from that sweetness a bit in this scene and stand up for herself. So if nothing else, you will get to hear some lovely voices.
I also do enjoy the last bit of the scene. Depending on how the actor played it, you were never sure whether the Phantom knew Christine had returned or not. Did he feel that she was there and couldn't face her? Did he never know at all? And him realizing she left the ring was a real heartbreaker. The disappearance was also pretty cool too and it was fun hearing the gasps from other audience members when it happened.
