Some of the ways to learn include;
Self taught: well I have seen people do this and once in awhile someone really gets it and can just do wonderful things with a tattoo needle (NOT A TATTOO GUN) but out of the hundreds that try to self-train most end up giving a lot of bad tattoos. It's not because they lack passion or that they are not willing to learn. The real problem is this is tattooing, these things don't come off. So when you put a tattoo on yourself or a friend it's FOREVER! So if it sucks, well then you just put a permanent screw-up on your best friend.
Even though I do not advise self training 100% I still believe that you should do your homework and learn all you can before you learn enter an apprenticeship or go to tattoo school it just makes sense, the more of the basics you have under you the easier it will come to you. A couple good books for nailing down the basics are; the Basic Fundamentals of Modern tattoo.
