The Core Concept: The HSN/SAC Master List
In TallyPrime, HSN codes and their corresponding descriptions are not just typed into each stock item. Instead, Tally maintains a central master list of HSN/SAC Details.
What it is: Each entry in this master list contains the HSN Code, its Description, and its associated GST Rate.
Why it's useful: When you update the description in this central master list, it can automatically reflect across all stock items that use that HSN code. This ensures consistency and saves you from updating hundreds of items individually.
Method 1: Updating the HSN Description in the Master List (Recommended)
This is the cleanest and most effective way to change a description for an existing HSN code.
Go to GST Details Master:
From the Gateway of Tally, go to Alter.
Under the "GST Details" section, select HSN/SAC.
Select the HSN Code to Update:
Tally will show you the list of all HSN codes you have created.
Select the HSN code whose description you want to change and press Enter.
Alter the Description:
You will now be in the "HSN/SAC Alteration" screen.
Navigate to the Description field.
Delete the old description and type the new, correct description.
Verify the tax rates are still correct.
Save the Changes:
Press Ctrl + A to save the updated HSN/SAC details.
Result: Any stock item that was linked to this specific HSN/SAC master will now automatically use the new description on invoices and in reports.
Method 2: Updating the Description "On-the-Fly" from a Stock Item
You can also update the description while altering a stock item. Tally is smart enough to update the master list from here as well.
