The Vietnam War was one of the most divisive conflicts in recent US history. The communist government of North Vietnam fought against South Vietnam, which received US support. This war cost the lives of millions, most of the dead being Vietnamese civilians. However, despite the US military strength... they lost.
The Vietnamese had better tactics, knew the terrain, and the morale of the American soldiers was low. Not everyone believed in this war. And then, the media got involved, going to the war zone and exposing the atrocities that were committed. US citizens were divided, many of them opposing the war.
Finally, in 1973, US forces withdrew from Vietnam. Communist forces took control, and the country became the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
