This is one of the most dangerous malfunctions that can occur with a diesel engine. It's called engine overspeed.

At some point, the engine begins to rev completely out of control, and even trying to turn the engine off doesn't help.

Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines don't require spark plugs. The fuel ignites automatically due to the high temperature and pressure inside the cylinders.

But the problem begins when a malfunction allows engine oil to enter the intake manifold. For a diesel engine, oil can also become fuel. The engine then begins to burn its own lubricant.

A vicious cycle then begins:
the higher the RPMs, the more oil is sucked in,
and the more oil, the faster the engine revs.

The RPMs can increase so much that the engine begins to destroy itself.

The fastest way to stop such a runaway is to shut off the air supply.

But if you don't understand how to do this correctly, the best solution is to immediately move as far away from the car as possible.
