Every company needs that secret sauce; that special thing that makes it different. Yours included. There are different ways to talk about it and different ways to approach it. What I want to talk about today is USP. USP stands for, “Unique Selling Proposition”.

A Unique Selling Proposition is a unique benefit to your customers. It's not a catchy slogan, it’s not a mission statement, it’s not an attribute about your company, it’s not anything like that. It’s a specific benefit to your customers. It is not a unique product, it is your unique approach to the product or service. This unique selling point can often set you apart in a crowded market.

This marketing strategy is often overlooked and companies try to be the ‘best at everything’. But that is not a very smart approach.

Let me give you two great modern day examples of unique selling propositions in action.

1. Volvo: their USP is safety. We all know it. Volvo is the safest car on the road. At least that's what we think.

2. Craftsman tools: They're so durable they're guaranteed for life. That’s a benefit to the customer.

What is your USP? Focus on the customer and you'll find it. And then when a prospective customer is looking at your product or service and is asking “Why should I buy from your?” Your USP should answer that question.
