The shoebill's English name literally translates as "shoe-billed." The British mockingly compare the bird's beak to a wooden shoe. The shoebill uses this contraption to catch food: fish, amphibians, and even small crocodiles. Moreover, the "shoe" is capable of breaking through a turtle's shell, so this bird is not so simple.
However, the rest of its body looks strange, like a mishmash of different creatures. For example, the legs resemble those of an ostrich or cassowary, the body resembles a stork, and the square head looks as if the beak was magnified tenfold for intimidation.
