A Prize Bond is a lottery bond, a non-interest-bearing security issued on behalf of the Irish Minister for Finance by the Prize Bond Company DAC. The funds raised from the sale of Prize Bonds are used to offset government borrowing and are refundable to the bond owner on demand.
Interest is returned to bond owners via prizes distributed by random selection of bonds. Prize Bonds were first introduced in Ireland in 1957, and the scheme was initially operated by the Bank of Ireland. The Prize Bond Company, a joint venture between An Post and FEXCO, is responsible for operating the scheme under its current contract until the end of 2019.
The National Treasury Management Agency is responsible for regulating the company. Prize Bonds can be purchased in units of five Irish pounds, with a minimum purchase of £10. The unit price is currently 6.25 Euros (equivalent to IR£4.92 at the final fixed exchange rate), and a minimum purchase of €25 is required.
