Here is a quick comparison of music and of the Okinawan Sanshin and Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer. Both are traditional folk instruments with only 3 strings, but they have very different sounds. By the way, there are several differences between Shamisen and Sanshin, but perhaps the biggest difference is that while Shamisen uses cat skin, Sanshin uses snake skin. Pentatonic scales, which are commonly used in Okinawan music have been traditionally used in many countries across the globe since ancient times.
Comparing instruments, cultures and music is fun!
