Beat Making Session IX [SP-404A | SP-202] (Chopping Jazz Guitar | Resample Method)
In this session I chop up some some Jazz Guitar samples to make a quick Lo-Fi Chill beat on the Roland SP-404A. I call this beat "Moth Food".
1:59 - I start with the Boss SP-202 Dr Sample. I have two Joe Pass guitar samples from the same song and four drum samples (sampled sequentially to a single pad) from Splice's "The Fantastic Sounds of Jay Dee" pack. The drum reel is sampled twice, at Lo-Fi 1 then Lo-Fi 2 - this is cool for allowing me to use the lower quality drums like ghost drum hits (e.g. having a strong and a weak Kick sample).
Pad 5 - Sample 1 (Mono, Standard 15.63 kHZ)
Pad 6 - Sample 2 (Mono, Standard 15.63 kHZ)
Pad 7 - Drum Reel (Mono, Lo-Fi 1 7.81 kHZ)
Pad 8 - Drum Reel (Mono, Lo-Fi 2 3.91 kHZ)
2:24 - Before sampling these onto the SP-404A I drop the pitch slightly on the jass guitar samples. Once everything is on the 404 I first chop the drums then re-arrange them to my usual layout for finger drumming.
4:10 - I use EQ MFX 13 to add a little lows to the kicks then resample them.
4:50 - The two guitar samples I designate to Pads 1 and 5 so I can then copy them across in a row before chopping them (i.e. Pad 1 goes to Pads 2-4 etc).
6:16 - Resample to create the guitar loop that will be my main sample. In this example I actually didn't want to stray too far from the original melody.
6:37 - Resample to create what will eventually be my intro sample. I then add Vinyl Sim to it, resample, add Isolator and resample. After this I copy both of my new samples to the same bank as the drums.
8:00 - Finally I use resample to record one long finger drum jam for about 2 minutes.
9:33 - The final beat with intro.
