Businessman Matt Bevin runs for Ky. Governor
FORT WRIGHT, Ky. (Angenette Levy) -- There was a warm welcome from Republicans in Fort Wright for Matt Bevin. Bevin said, Encourage people when they go out there to vote their values. Vote your values." Born in New Hampshire, Bevin moved to Kentucky in 1999. He's a father of nine and a military veteran who's worked in the financial industry and at his family's bell company. In 2014, he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for Senate against Mitch McConnell who he didn't believe was conservative enough. The Bevin campaign considers northern Kentucky one of its strongholds so they've really been focusing get out the vote efforts in key parts of the state. But Bevin said he does have ideas about issues facing northern Kentucky. He knows the Brent Spence Bridge needs to be replaced but doesn't support tolls. "I have proposed us using GARVEE bonds. GARVEE bonds allow us to bond our obligation using future appropriations from the federal highway trust fund. This is how other states have done these things, this is how we need to do it. We need to sit down with Ohio, we need to make a command level decision and we need to move forward. Simple as that," said Bevin. When it comes to the heroin epidemic, Bevin said more money needs to be spent on prevention, The root cause of this is there isn't enough economic opportunity. There's not enough alternative for people at early stages in their lives to have more productive and viable choices. There's not enough intercession on the part of those of us in society to intercede and help people with their addiction problem." Bevin said if elected, he'll shut down Kynect, the state's medical insurance exchange, and move Kentuckians to a federal exchange. He plans to defund Planned Parenthood, he supports school choice and Right to Work legislation. On election night, he'll find out whether voters in the Bluegrass state agree with him.
