4 Stroke Engine Explained with Animation
The Four Strokes:
A four-stroke engine completes its cycle in four distinct piston movements, aptly named strokes. These strokes happen within the cylinder, where the magic happens. Each stroke is crucial for the engine to function efficiently.
1. Intake Stroke:
o The piston moves down, creating a vacuum in the cylinder.
o An intake valve opens, allowing a mix of air and fuel (air-fuel mixture) to rush in.
2. Compression Stroke:
o The piston moves back up, squeezing the air-fuel mixture for a powerful combustion.
o Both intake and exhaust valves are closed during this squeeze.
3. Power Stroke:
o A spark plug ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture, causing a small explosion.
o This explosion pushes the piston down with force, rotating the crankshaft and creating power for the engine.
o Again, both valves are shut during this stroke.
4. Exhaust Stroke:
o The piston moves up again, pushing the burnt gases out of the cylinder through an open exhaust valve.
o The intake valve remains closed during this cleanup.
The Players Involved:
• Piston: The reciprocating heart of the engine, moving up and down within the cylinder.
• Crankshaft: A rotating shaft connected to the piston by a connecting rod, converting the piston's movement into rotational power.
• Valves: Controlled by a camshaft, these open and close at specific times to allow the air-fuel mixture in and the exhaust gases out.
• Spark Plug (Gasoline Engines): Creates the spark to ignite the air-fuel mixture in gasoline engines.
The Cycle Continues:
Once the exhaust stroke is complete, the cycle starts all over again with the intake stroke. This continuous loop keeps the engine running as long as there's fuel and spark (or compression ignition for diesel engines).
