Rice-duck farming is one of the main practices of traditional Chinese agriculture. The method is very simple: 10-20 days after planting the rice, but before it flowers, ducks are released into the field. The birds do not eat the rice seedlings, but they do eat the weeds and their seeds growing between them, and they also find all insect pests.
The only drawback is that after the rice growing season and the ducks' active consumption of weeds, they must be slaughtered for meat: they become too fat and begin to damage the plants. Therefore, the farmer must breed new ducks every season.
