Offshore platform float-over installation is a technique used to install large topside structures onto offshore jackets or floating structures. This method is commonly used for the installation of integrated topside modules on fixed platforms, semi-submersible platforms, and FPSOs (Floating Production Storage and Offloading units). In float-over operations, the topsides of a production platform, which may vary in size from less than 1,000 tons to more than 40,000 tons, are installed from a barge. The barge is towed to the field and positioned between the legs of the supporting structure or jacket. leg mating units (lmus), deck support units, sway and surge fenders – make a valuable contribution to the float-over method of installing the topsides of offshore oil and gas platforms from a barge.
The float-over process provides a much less costly solution. But the crucial challenge, is transferring the load from the barge to the jacket. This must be done in a controlled manner without causing damage to either structure, even though waves, currents or winds are causing the barge to move. The lmus – steel structures incorporating rubber elements – make this possible by dampening the Using LMUs during a float-over process, the loads can be transferred from the barge to the base structure in a controlled manner. LMUs consist of a steel structure incorporating rubber elements to achieve a specified spring rate, depending on the expected loads and movements. Here’s an overview of the process and its key aspects:

1. Engineering and Planning
Detailed engineering and planning are crucial. This includes structural analysis, marine operations planning, and risk assessments.
Environmental conditions such as wave height, currents, and wind speed are thoroughly analyzed to select the optimal installation window.

2. Transportation
The topside module is transported to the offshore location using a barge or a heavy transport vessel (HTV).
The transport vessel is equipped with ballast systems to control buoyancy and stability during transportation.

3. Mating and Float-Over
The vessel is carefully positioned over the jacket or receiving structure.
The float-over method involves partially submerging the transport vessel by ballasting down, allowing the topside to be floated over the substructure.
Once in position, the vessel is deballasted, transferring the weight of the topside onto the substructure.

4. Positioning and Alignment
Accurate positioning and alignment are critical to ensure the topside fits precisely onto the jacket legs or columns.
Specialized equipment such as guide posts, docking cones, and mating units are used to facilitate this process.

5. Load Transfer
The load transfer from the transport vessel to the substructure is a gradual and carefully monitored process.
The use of hydraulic jacks and load monitoring systems helps ensure a smooth transfer and avoid overstressing any components.

6. Final Installation and Hook-Up
After the topside is in place, it is secured to the substructure through welding or bolting.
Final hook-up and commissioning activities are performed, which may include the installation of risers, pipelines, and electrical connections.

Advantages of Float-Over Installation

Reduced Offshore Work Much of the topside construction and integration work can be done onshore, reducing the amount of work required offshore.
Cost-Effective It can be more cost-effective compared to traditional heavy-lift crane methods, especially for large and integrated topsides.
Time-Efficient The overall installation time can be shorter since the topside is installed in one piece rather than in multiple smaller lifts.
