The revolutionary Kaluza-Klein theory and the 10 dimensions of the universe
The Kaluza-Klein theory proposes the existence of a fifth dimension in addition to the four dimensions we perceive. The addition of the fifth dimension was necessary to unite the gravity described by Einstein with electromagnetism. From this concept, string theory developed, which posits a 10-dimensional universe. The six extra dimensions are called Calabi-Yau spaces.
