So first off, what’s video hosting?
Video hosting is simply a complicated phrase that means a place online that you can go upload your videos to and allow people to play them back.
YouTube is an example of a video hosting service, but there are a ton of other options out there depending on your needs.
Right now you’re watching this video on YouTube.
YouTube is one of the most popular video hosting services around, and it’s really good at helping you get found.
So unless you’re a large company with its own internal video hosting service, you’ll likely want to start with YouTube and upload your videos there.
YouTube is free, comes with some great #SEO tools, and has really powerful backend technology.
Plus if you’ve considered running targeted ads on YouTube
where you can reach people based on who they are,
their interests and habits and what they’re actively researching online for example,
you have to host your video on YouTube.
To get started with ads like these, contact the email in the description.
The biggest downsides to using YouTube is that there is little-to-no customer service – outside of what you see online on text pages.
That and you can’t customize video players - like changing the color scheme for example
Or link out to external websites unless you’re a YouTube Partner, which you can only get after getting 1000 subscribers.

Now the second most popular video hosting service is Vimeo.
Vimeo was the first to support high-definition video way back in 2007
And they now offer hosting, sharing, and even live streaming videos in not just HD but 4K.
Vimeo's entry-level tier is also free, and they let you control who you want to see your video based on location, for example.
They also offer great collaboration tools, if you have a team who that is working on a video together.
The main downsides to using Vimeo is that you can’t customize their video players either like YouTube. Unless you pay, and the SEO offering aren’t as good as YouTube’s.
Now third up on our list is Wistia. We use Wistia on the Sharp Eye Animation website and love it.
Wistia provides not only video hosting, but also video creation tools, like Soapbox, which is their screen recording software.
And they offer a lot of flexibility for their video players. You can change colors, link out to other websites, embed forms and all kinds of stuff.
They also have great customer service and really cool integrations with marketing tools like Salesforce, Marketo and Mailchimp.
The main downside to using Wistia, is the fact that it’s a bit expensive.
JWplayer has been around forever, and they’re used by lots of large corporations and news websites.
Their players are really easy to embed and customize, and they’re usually up-to date with latest technologies.
We’ve found that the only issues with JWplayer is that there isn’t the best customer support, and you do need strong technical chops to use it.
Vidyard is another great video hosting service - pretty similar to Wistia
They offer video players, hosting and analytics.
It’s also a bit pricey, but like Wistia you get a great-looking player and analytics that YouTube and Vimeo just don’t have.
We’ve found that they also don’t provide much support, and using it isn’t as intuitive as it could be
