Target Training a Reticulated Python
Even snakes have to go to training school! From a small peafowl to a large lion, target training is a method Zoo Keepers use across species. Target training uses positive reinforcement to teach an animal to touch a target, in this instance, a large round ball, with a part of their body. Target training is beneficial to both the Zoo Keeper and the animal: it provides a safe means to communicate with the animal while also giving the animal a choice to participate in their own care.
Bo, the reticulated python, has come a long way in his target training! It has taken a lot of time and patience, from both Bo and his Zoo Keepers, but all of that work has created a safer environment to work together to educate guests and provide the best possible care.
