Jupiter being the biggest planet is solar system and most of the planetary mass is concentrated in it. It has huge gravitational influence on its surroundings and either kick asteroids away getting inside or pull asteroids to itself. Shoemaker Levy is the latest event that was captured in recent times and this exactly what Jupiter doing throughout its 4.5 billion years of history. Jupiter act like a vacuum cleaner sucking in or kicking out asteroids. Its a asteroids killer.
