Layering is vital for realistic coloured pencil drawings, whether you own 3 pencils or 300. In fact, the fewer colours you have, the more important layering becomes — because chances are, you won’t have an exact colour match to your reference.
In this tutorial, I’ll draw a rose using only the 12-pencil Faber-Castell Polychromos set. Even without the perfect pinks or greens, careful layering lets me create the shades I need and build a convincing, realistic drawing.
This project is a great example of how you can achieve impressive results with limited supplies by focusing on technique rather than the size of your pencil set.
