Using Resolve Speed Editor with Premiere via CommandPost!
The Resolve Speed Editor can now be used with Premiere Pro! Although I love the Speed Editor, its functionality with the edit page on Resolve leaves a lot to be desired. I like Resolve better than Premiere Pro, but I wanted to speed up my editing workflow so I decided to dive into the world of customization. I hope that DaVinci will allow full customization in the future. Maybe if a ton of Premiere editors start to use the Speed Editor, DaVinci will finally give us the customization we need.
How it works: In Premiere Pro keyboard settings, you will have all your custom keystrokes. For example, I map "T" to trim, not text like the default settings. If you have a unique setting like "selection follows playhead" you will have to set a keyboard shortcut for that in Premiere. CommandPost is a free program for Mac, that allows us to customize the Speed Editor to make editing a lot faster. It allows you to type any keyboard combination and map it to a key. Most importantly, it allows for each key to use "long press." This means that the 45 keys on on the speed editor actually give you 90 customized keystrokes-- All without having to use Shift, Command, or Option keys! Using the "T" key example, I map that key in CommandPost to the "roll" key. If I long press the roll key it exits trim mode using a left mouse click. This means that you can also add mouse commands in CommandPost. So every time I want to left mouse click in Premiere, I could hold down the roll key...pretty cool. To use these settings, you must first install my Premiere keyboard layout (make sure it is selected in Premiere) then import the CommandPost settings in that program. I recommend trying my settings first to see how everything works, and then create your own.
*These CommandPost custom setting will NOT work with Resolve. If you open Resolve, it will bypass CommandPost. If you change the keycap locations, etc, you will get very confused if you use Resolve. I have a Speed Editor for Premiere and a second without customization for Resolve.
When opening CommandPost, click the "control surfaces" tab at the top, and choose Resolve. To import preferences to CommandPost, click the large "import settings" button to replace the current setup. **Be sure you change the application to Premiere pro first. This allows the Speed Editor to be linked to Premiere. Make sure you uncheck "ignore application" or the remap won't work. This is used if you want to bypass the mapping and use the default settings.
I am using this in Premiere Pro 2024 and have not tried it on previous versions. I'm pretty sure the main keyboard layout structure can be copied to other NLE's like FCPx and AVID, but I have yet to do so. If anyone makes a keyboard layout for those programs, feel free to share. I mostly use Premiere and Resolve nowadays.

I moved a lot of keys around via a keycap puller. The replacement keycaps just snap on. An example of things I moved were the Cam 1-9 keys-- They were in a reverse order on the original Speed Editor. Although I understand the theory behind their default placement, it confuses me every time. When I moved the Cam keys around, CommandPost will assume the keys are in the same location as the factory. So you have to map the keystrokes you want to the key location-- not the name shown for the keys. To remove the knob wheel, carefully pull out the rubber from the sides. A little hole will be visible. I used a really small torque wrench and unscrewed it through
the hole.
