Tito Scipa (1888-1965) was perhaps the greatest tenore di grazia. His singing was a model of elegance and taste. While criitics sometimes complained that his voice was small, and his range limited, he nevertheless enjoyed great popularity, and had large numbers of devoted fans who adored him. He has been called a bel canto tenor, but that term is imprecise at best, and refers as much to a school of vocal production as it does to a style of singing. He was essentially a light lyric tenor, who sang with great charm and taste, and excelled in roles roles such as Nemorino, Almaviva, Lucia, Ottavio, Werther and Alfredo (La Traviata). He sang at the Chicago Opera, the Met, in Buenos Aires, and throughout Italy.
