Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI)
How it works:

Delivers medication in the form of a dry powder.

Breath-actuated: the patient inhales rapidly and deeply to pull the medication into the lungs.

Key points:

No propellant (environmentally friendly).

Requires strong and fast inhalation.

Often comes in capsule or blister form to be punctured before inhalation.

Pros:

Portable and compact.

No need for hand-breath coordination.

Environmentally friendly.

Cons:

Not suitable for young children or very sick patients (who can't inhale strongly enough).

Moisture can affect powder.

🔸 Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI)
How it works:

Delivers a specific amount of aerosolized medication using a propellant gas (like HFA).

Activated by pressing the canister and inhaling simultaneously.

Key points:

Requires hand-breath coordination, unless used with a spacer.

Propellant-based delivery

Pros:

Fast-acting relief.

Useful for all age groups when used with a spacer.

Portable and quick to use.

Cons:

Difficult for some patients to coordinate.

Uses propellants (environmental concerns).

Needs regular cleaning to prevent blockage.
