1st Reading (Acts 1:15-17, 20-26)
In the presence of the brothers, about one hundred and twenty people gathered together, Peter spoke thus: "Brothers, the Scripture spoken by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David concerning Judas must be fulfilled. He showed the way to those who arrested Jesus, for he was one of us and had a share in our ministry.
For it is written in the Book of Psalms: 'Let his house be desolate, and let no one dwell in it. And let another take his place.'"
It is therefore necessary that one of those who accompanied us throughout the time the Lord Jesus was with us, beginning from John's baptism until the day he was taken up from us into heaven, should become with us a witness of his resurrection."
Two were appointed: Joseph, called Barsabbas, surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
And they prayed thus: "You, Lord, know the hearts of all; show us which of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas has abandoned himself to go his own way."
And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was added to the eleven apostles.
Gospel (John 15:9-17)
Jesus said to his disciples:
"As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, for I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide, so that the Father may give you whatever you ask of him in my name. This I command you, that you love one another."
