Yale Russian Chorus: Dunya. To judge by how often she appears in songs, Dunya appears to have been among the most popular girls with Russian soldiers (and students) over many generations. This manifestation of her reached its apogee at the beginning of the 20th century, but some suggest that it goes back to the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78) and maybe even further, and she survived into the Bolshevik era with references to commissars! A typical call-response marching song, it seems to have been used for games of one-upmanship between rival military groupings (such as regiments disparaging other regiments) or between individuals competing over who could come up with new characters and the cleverest rhymes.

Yale Russian Chorus YRC CD-002 (1992): New Haven CT, 1992. Conductor: David-Marc Finley.
