Being There: The Anonymous Project and Omar Victor Diop's Kodachrome Masterpiece
Lee Shulman of The Anoymous Project and Omar Victor Diop collaborated to rewrite American post-war family history in the most marvellous way.
In 2017, award winning filmmaker Lee Shulman founded The Anonymous Project, one of the largest collections of amateur photography in the world, featuring nearly a million Kodachrome slides, mostly American family photos taken in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The subjects are unknown, but the situations immediately familiar. Being There is a collaboration with the acclaimed Senegalese self-portraitist Omar Victor Diop, in which Omar is cleverly inserted into a selection of family situations as if he were part of the family. The presence of an African man into domestic situations in white, middle-class, segregated America creates a series of absurb and often amusing scenes, made even moreso by Omar’s interactions with the people in the photos. But beneath the surreality Being There makes serious contribution to the ongoing conversation around race, privilege and exclusion.
