How to make a battery from fruit to light an LED.
The lemon battery is an experiment proposed as a project in many science textbooks. It consists of inserting two objects made of different metals, such as a galvanized nail and a copper coin, into a lemon. These two objects act as electrodes, causing an electrochemical reaction mediated by the lemon juice that generates a small amount of electric current.
The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate to students how batteries work. After the battery is assembled, a multimeter can be used to check the generated voltage, which usually does not exceed 1 V. The voltage and current produced are insufficient to light a standard LED, which would require a battery made from several lemon batteries. At least two batteries connected in series are needed to double the voltage, and several connected in parallel to achieve currents of around 5 mA.
Technically, oxidation and reduction occur.
At the anode, zinc is oxidized:
Zn → Zn2+ - 2 e-
At the cathode, copper is reduced:
Cu+++ 2e- → Cu
A common alternative to lemons is potatoes1 or sometimes apples. Any fruit or vegetable that contains acid or another electrolyte can be used, but lemons are preferred due to their higher acidity.2 Other metal combinations (such as magnesium and copper) are more efficient, but zinc and copper are usually used because they are reasonably safe and easy to obtain.
Using a magnesium strip instead of zinc should approximately double the current produced in the lemon cell (approximately 240 µA with zinc and about 400 µA with magnesium) and also slightly increase the voltage (0.97 V with zinc and 1.6 V with magnesium). The voltages and currents achieved depend critically on the acidity of the lemons and the size and metal of the objects used.
