In this video, I’m turning an ESP32-C6 board into a Zigbee router for my Home Assistant setup.
Instead of using the ESP32-C6 as a normal Wi-Fi ESPHome device, I’m flashing it with Zigbee router firmware so it can join my existing Zigbee2MQTT network and help strengthen the Zigbee mesh.
The ESP32-C6 is interesting because it has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Thread support, which makes it a useful little board for smart home projects. In this setup, Wi-Fi is optional. ESPHome is mainly used to build and flash the firmware, while the Zigbee side handles the mesh routing.
I’ll go through what a Zigbee router does, why battery-powered sensors are usually end devices, how to flash the ESP32-C6, how to pair it with Zigbee2MQTT, and where to place it so it can actually help your network.
