While they may sound similar muffled hearing and hearing loss are different. When you have hearing loss, it's not just muffled sounds, but rather a spectrum of hearing impairment where certain frequencies or tones don't come through clearly during hearing tests. Muffled hearing feels like someone has covered your ears, creating a sense of fullness, which can happen with sinus infections or congestion in the jugular vein that affects blood flow to your ears. If the congestion gets severe enough, you may even develop tinnitus or ringing in your ears.
