Changing the language in Poe for multilingual conversation practice
Independent languages consultant from the UK, Joe Dale demonstrates how to practise a conversation in French with the large language model, Poe by using the in-built microphone feature to input prompts and changing the language of the browser.
Here are the step by step instructions:
Step 1: Start a conversation with Poe using your microphone. For example, you can say something like, "Hi there, I would like to practise my French conversation by having a chat with you in a French cafe. I want you to be the waiter, and I'd like you to speak only in French. Is that okay?"
Step 2: Poe responds in French, which is awesome! But here's where the magic happens. When you try to respond in French, you might notice that Poe doesn't quite understand you.
Step 3: Fear not! Here's the workaround: Click on the three dots in your browser (that's Google Chrome in this case), go to "Settings," and then navigate to "Languages."
Step 4: Now, click on "Add language" and select the language you want to use. For instance, I chose French. Then, make sure to check the box that says "Display Google Chrome in this language" and click "Relaunch."
Step 5: Wait a couple of seconds for your browser to relaunch. Now, your browser is set to a different language.
Step 6: With your browser now in a different language, you'll notice that when you use the microphone feature to speak in that language, Poe understands you perfectly!
Step 7: Wait for the microphone icon to appear, and when it does, start speaking in your chosen language. For example, "Bonjour, je voudrais un croissant et un café s'il vous plaît."
Step 8: Voilà! It's working seamlessly now, and Poe understands your language input without a hitch. Isn't that amazing?
NB:
Age Restriction: To use Poe, you must be 13 years of age or older. This is in line with online privacy and data protection regulations.
Parental Permission: If you're under 18 and wish to use Poe, it's essential to have parental or guardian permission. Online safety is paramount, and this requirement ensures that younger users have the guidance and consent of a responsible adult.
Account Creation: When creating an account on Poe, you won't need to provide a mobile phone number, which can be a relief for those who prefer not to share it. However, you will need to provide your birthday. This information is used to ensure compliance with age requirements and personalise your experience.
