Do you have one of those singers, or HAVE you had one? The singers who mostly, or sometimes, have no problem with pitch, but then...yeek!!
They’re completely lost.
We’ve all had them, and that kind of singer is much more confusing than your standard-issue “tone-deaf” person. But I have the answer to WHY they do that. (Spoiler...it’s a brain thing.) Once you know WHY, we’ll look at ways to help them. Then YOU get to be the superhero!
We’re talking about the student who seems to match pitch just fine, except when they can’t. Or they get lost if you’re not playing the melody with them. They’re not “tone-deaf”. They love to sing. They’re smart. So WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
I have an article (with drawings!) about this very subject that I’d love to share with you. It’s called “Why Singers Are Stupid”. Below is the link!

➡️ Meredith Colby has been teaching “microphone” singers - people who sing in bands, singer/songwriters, and music theater people - for over 30 years. As a veteran band singer of over 10,000 hours onstage, she knew there had to be a way to get singers a healthy way to sound awesome, even when they can’t hear themselves. Studying brain science and putting it together with what she has learned about singing (and voices) she created The Neuro-Vocal Method. Her book is called Money Notes: How to Sing High, Loud, Healthy, and Forever. She teaches voice teachers, pro singers, adult singers, and present for groups.
