Andromeda's halo of gas reaches about halfway to us.
By its makers' own description, it is already touching ours.
Two hours of quiet narration, no adverts.

Andromeda is usually pictured as a bright island across an empty sea, coming toward us for a meeting billions of years away. The space between is not empty. Andromeda was the first spiral ever measured moving, in 1912, and it was moving toward us. In 1959 two astronomers argued from that one fact that the pair could only hold together if far more matter filled the dark than either galaxy shows. Hubble has since found a halo of gas around Andromeda reaching roughly halfway here, and our own galaxy sits inside a hot halo of its own.

We cross the space slowly. A little cloud recorded in Shiraz in the tenth century, in the mouth of a fish. A new star in Andromeda in 1885, and the shadow its debris left a century later. Vesto Slipher's plates across a New Year's night, the standing ovation in Evanston, and the manuscript he never published. Kahn and Woltjer weighing two galaxies by the way they fall. The quasars used as lamps behind a fog, the hydrogen strung toward Triangulum, the stream of a galaxy Andromeda took in, a galaxy of forty six stars, and a neighbour that is slowly going quiet.

There is nothing here you need to remember. No test at the end, nothing to stay awake for. Let it run, listen for as long as you like, and sleep through the rest.

What is measured, what is inferred and what is contested are kept apart throughout, and part twenty one gives the case against the episode's claim at full strength: forty three pencil lines through an enormous volume, a halo with no edge, our own halo the least certain number of all, and a merger of the stars that is no longer treated as certain. The word touching is the mapping team's own description, and it is left exactly there.

WHAT YOU WILL HEAR
Why the first thing ever measured about Andromeda was that it is coming toward us
Why that one motion made astronomers fill the dark between the galaxies with something unseen
Why the meeting of our galaxy and Andromeda may already be happening, in the gas

Whether you are here for the astronomy, the history, or simply something quiet to fall asleep to, none of it needs you awake.

Built for sleep: 2 hours 15 minutes of continuous narration, recorded quietly and mastered with no sudden peaks. The picture holds a dark palette and never cuts to bright. A soft chord bed fades to silence at the end rather than stopping, because an abrupt stop after two hours wakes people.
