[ TUTORIAL 16: Using a Layer Mask to Add an Object to an Image ]
In this tutorial, we'll show you how to add an object to an image using a layer mask and create creative compositions.
Start with two layers. The image with the object you want to add should be on the top layer, while the main image should be on the bottom layer.
In the Layers panel, make sure the top layer (the object you want to add) is selected.
At the bottom of the Layers panel, click the Add Layer Mask icon. A white rectangle (or thumbnail) is added and linked to the top layer. This white rectangle is the layer mask that determines which part of the linked layer is visible and which part is hidden. White areas in the mask are visible, while black areas are hidden.
In the Tools panel, select the Brush tool. After selecting the mask (by clicking its thumbnail in the Layers panel), paint black or white over the areas of the linked layer you want to hide or make visible.

In this tutorial: Use a layer mask to add an object to an image.
