School grades - don't mean anything? Excellent students on the Unified State Exam
People get straight A's, earn medals, and then can't even pass the Unified State Exam. The Minister of Education of Tatarstan reported this story this week. Five computer science graduates had an A+ in their final year, but failed to meet the minimum threshold on the exam. A similar situation arose with five medalists who failed to meet the minimum threshold in one subject during the Unified State Exam. One medalist failed to meet the threshold in two subjects. So what's going on? Is the Unified State Exam so biased that straight-A students, medalists, and the very best are given conditional failing grades? Or are they simply over-stressed? But how nervous do you have to be to fail the minimum score? Or is the problem really the biased nature of school grades? When you can get an A in a subject simply for diligence or even just for being pretty, and you can negotiate a medal with teachers who are all on your side and who certainly won't deny you something as trivial as a high school diploma, and with it, extra points when applying to a university.
