Cannot open InDesign document! The file is damaged and cannot be recovered (Error Code: 5) - a fix: Sometimes, Adobe InDesign will display a message similar to, "Cannot open 'file.indd' ..." This video presents a solution.
How To Fix Adobe InDesign Error Code 5 "cannot open document" (Steps):
1. Download Markzware OmniMarkz.
2. Open corrupt .indd InDesign file in OmniMarkz.
3. Review Preview and Export IDML.
4. Open the fixed IDML file, in InDesign 2022 or lower, down to CS6!
This was an amazing example, with a huge catalog we used. I watched Adobe MAX 2021 and immediately downloaded InDesign 2022. When I tried to open this InDesign page layout, I got the error message that it cannot open the document (Error Code: 5)!
I figured it was a bug in InDesign 2022. Nope. InDesign 2021 displayed the same message, "cannot open". Adobe claimed they could not fix it, but Markzware OmniMarkz can fix this InDesign error!
I did a drag and drop of the apparently damaged InDesign file onto OmniMarkz and saw a Preview of the page layout, in seconds. I chose to convert the file to other DTP apps (I also had the option to simply open in InDesign). Originally, this was a CC2019 file. In OmniMarkz, I chose “Export to IDML”. Then, this scrubbed, fixed InDesign layout opened right up, in Adobe InDesign 2022!
