This period inspired me to share insights about an unconscious bias called negativity bias, which is our tendency to pay more attention to and react more strongly to negative events than the positive events in our lives. It is a mental product of our evolution and designed for our own survival, especially at times of crisis like COVID19.
Unfortunately, it often results in lots of suffering for the person and their surrounding, imposter syndrome, fear of rejection, and major loss of productivity. Interestingly, men are more likely to externalise negativity bias as with outward anger, whereas women - to internalise it in forms of anxiety or depression.
When we practice mindfulness, we can identify in real time our bias and regain our ability to choose our response rather than react automatically - and actively work on our conscious attitudes and external communication and foster values such as #compassion, #kindness and #empowerment.
