I think using a shield gives you a higher chance of hitting him and halting his attacks the bigger your shield is, unfortunately, I was extremely unlucky and he somehow managed to land a critical hit at my thigh. Nonetheless this was the fastest solo fight against this fellow without the use of ridiculously large maces.
